Greenland and the Faroe Islands in school
A new report shows that Danish schoolchildren know too little about Greenland and the Faroe Islands. This points to a need for more teaching and better materials that can strengthen students’ knowledge of the Realm.
At Polarskolen, we work to make teaching about Greenland and the Faroe Islands more accessible and engaging for students and teachers in Danish primary schools.
Need for more knowledge in school
The report shows that many students have limited knowledge of both the history, culture and society of Greenland and the Faroe Islands. At the same time, the subject is an important part of understanding the Commonwealth and Denmark’s relations in the North Atlantic.
It is therefore important that students have the opportunity to learn more about the two countries already in school.
Teaching through relevant materials
Polarskolen offers teaching materials that make it easier for teachers to work with the subject in their lessons. The materials allow students to explore:
- History of Greenland and the Faroe Islands
- culture and society
- life in the North Atlantic
- relations in the Commonwealth
The materials are developed with a focus on dialogue, reflection and students’ curiosity.

The Polar School wants to strengthen this knowledge in schools and make the subject more present to students throughout the country.
