Theme 5

Identity and community

Time required: approximately 2–3 lessons

Intro 

In Theme 5, students come closer to questions about who they are – and where they belong. The theme is based on young people in Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Denmark and their thoughts about identity, language, friendship and community. Something that often recurs when I talk to young people is that they can feel at home in several places at once. You can be Greenlandic, Faroese or Dane – and at the same time something more.

Content and direction

This theme focuses on some of the factors that help shape people’s identity and experience of community. Both are of great importance to the individual – and can be formed and developed continuously throughout life.

Various topics come into play here, for example:

  • Venskab og relationer 
  • Community and belonging
  • The importance of language

Video interviews (approx. 15 min.)

The video gives students insight into young people’s thoughts on identity and community. It becomes clear that identity is not necessarily unambiguous – and that it can be experienced differently, depending on where you stand.

Conversation in class

In my experience, the topic naturally lends itself to personal conversations.

This could, for example, be about:

  • What community means
  • How to experience belonging
  • What role do language and relationships play?

Assignments/answer sheets

Questions are divided into three categories:

  • Fact
  • Youth perspectives (video interviews)
  • Elevens egne overvejelser 

Perspective

The idea is that Theme 5 brings together threads from the topics worked on earlier in the course. It would be nice if the students began to understand the meaning of identity and at the same time sensed that community can accommodate differences as well as similarities.

Theme Kahoot – digital and analogue queue

If the class is working digitally, they can access Kahoot via link and complete it as a shared activity. The questions are also available in an analog version. They can be used if you are working without a screen – or if you want to take the questions at your own pace, e.g. as a shared review in class. The Kahoots checklist is included as an appendix at the back of the learning guide.
