Hi, my name is Gregers. I’m the one who created this course.

It is about young people in three countries: Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Denmark – also known as the Kingdom of Denmark. You might be thinking: “Okay… but why?”

For many years, I have travelled in all three countries – and I have met many interesting, thoughtful and very different young people. One thing has made me curious: young people in these three countries don’t know very much about each other’s lives and everyday experiences. At the same time, they may have ideas about each other that are not always true – what we call prejudices. I would like to change that.

That’s why I created On the Way Together.

What will you work with?

You will:

  • Meet young people from Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Denmark.
  • Hear their stories and thoughts.
  • Work with your own answers and experiences.
  • Discover both differences and similarities

Where are we going?

I would like to tell you already now where this journey will end. In the final theme, Theme 7, you will:

  • Create your own video interviews
  • Work with the subject: What does a good youth life look like – in Greenland, The Faroe Islands and Denmark?

You will use everything you have worked with throughout the course – your own answers, the videos, the texts and the fact boxes. So remember to save everything.

How is the course structured?

The material is built around seven themes, which together give you insight into the lives of young people in Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Denmark:

What is culture?

Culture is the way we live. It includes things like:

  • Language
  • Traditions
  • Values
  • How we spend time together

All people are shaped by the culture – or cultures – they grow up in. Culture and identity are closely connected.

What is prejudice?

Prejudice is when we judge someone before really knowing them – often in a negative way. Prejudices often come from a lack of knowledge, and they can change when we get to know each other better.

What is identity?

Identity is about who we are. It includes our language, values, interests and the communities we feel part of. We can belong to more than one place at the same time. Our identity is shaped by the culture we grow up in, but it can also change over time.

Talk together in your class

Culture: What do you think of when you hear the words: Greenlandic culture, Faroese culture and Danish culture?

Prejudice: Can you think of examples of prejudices about Greenlanders, Faroese people and Danes? Why can prejudices be a problem?

Identity: Talk about how the culture young people grow up in – in Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Denmark – can influence their identity.
